Pepper export turnover reached in 6 months

By the end of June 2023, Vietnam exported 152,986 tons of pepper of all kinds, of which black pepper reached 138,377 tons and white pepper reached 14,609 tons. Total export turnover reached 485.9 million USD, of which black pepper reached 417.9 million USD, white pepper reached 68 million USD.

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, Vietnam's pepper output in 2023 is estimated to reach about 190,000 tons, an increase of 3.8% compared to 2022. Floods occurred last July in the Central Highlands region, especially is in Dak Nong province, it will affect pepper gardens if the pepper gardens are not treated with drainage to avoid flooding. However, that is not as worrying as the El Nino phenomenon that will take place at the end of the year and last until early next year. This leads to drought, lack of rain and may reduce Vietnamese pepper production next year.

Compared to the same period last year, pepper exports increased by 21.8%, equivalent to 27,433 tons. However, export turnover decreased by 14.6%, equivalent to a decrease of 82.3 million USD. The average export price of black pepper in the first 6 months of 2023 reached 3,484 USD/ton, white pepper reached 5,011 USD/ton, down 879 USD for black pepper and 1,070 USD for white pepper, respectively.

Meanwhile, the domestic pepper market has mixed developments, closely reflecting the market. By mid-May 2023, the domestic price was still at 76,000 VND/kg, then the price continuously decreased and is currently only around 70,000 VND/kg. Weak purchasing power from traditional markets such as the United States and Europe, combined with signs of slowing down from the Chinese market, which has reduced purchasing since June, in addition to the psychology of waiting for the harvest of Brazil and Indonesia is the cause. Reasons why pepper prices go down.

Also according to the Vietnam Pepper Association, the amount of pepper exported in the past 6 months shows that this year's quantity is not much left. It is expected that by the end of August 2023, all 2023 output will be exported, so we hope to have a positive impact on the market in the last months of the year.
